First Attempt at Breaking 90 - Temecula Creek Golf Club
If you’ve ever escaped San Diego for a quick golf day trip, Temecula Creek Golf Club is one of those “worth the drive” spots—wide-open SoCal scenery, oak trees, and that wine-country calm that makes you feel like you’re on a mini vacation even before you tee it up. It’s a 27-hole property with three different nines, so every visit can feel a little different.

This was Attempt #1 on the Road to 90, and honestly… it started exactly how you dream it up.
I was +8 through 8 holes, which had me right on pace to flirt with a 90. The swing felt decent, decision-making was solid, and I wasn’t trying to be a hero. Then the golf gods reminded me what this series is about.
On the 9th (a par 4) I posted an 8—the classic blow-up hole that turns a “let’s go low” front nine into a “hang on for dear life” front nine. That brought me to +12 at the turn.
And the back nine… just kind of snowballed. Mentally, it’s tough to reset after taking a punch like that, and I didn’t respond the way I need to if I’m going to live in the 80s. I shot +16 on the back, finishing +28 for a 99.
The big win: this was my first time breaking 100. That’s a legit milestone and I’m taking it as proof that the path is real. The big lesson: if I want 89, I can’t let one hole become three holes.
What I learned (and what I’m taking into the next round):

Limit the damage. One double is annoying. One “8” is a round-changer.

Reset faster. I’ve gotta treat the next tee box like a brand-new round.

Play for the boring miss. When things start slipping, the goal is fairway/green, not miracle shots.

Next up: CrossCreek Golf Club for Attempt #2 to break 90. I’ve heard it can be a real test—firm conditions, tricky greens, and some dramatic holes—so the focus is going to be simple: stay patient and keep big numbers off the card.
