Chick & Hawk sits at 145 Leucadia Boulevard in Encinitas, right in the heart of Leucadia. The vibe is cool and relaxed, the space is small but well put together, and the menu is focused on doing a few things really well rather than trying to be everything to everyone. That kind of focus tends to produce better food, and Chick & Hawk proves it.
The spice menu runs from 180 all the way up to 900. For reference, 180 is mild, 360 is a step up, 720 is serious heat, and 900 is for people who genuinely enjoy suffering. We ordered the 720 and the 360 to cover both ends of the group, along with the crispy blackened fish sandwich and fries.
The chicken sandwiches were the standout. The breading here is different from what you might expect. It is not the thick, crunchy, stay-on style you get at a lot of spots. It is a little more moist and lighter, which lets the flavor of the chicken come through instead of hiding behind a thick crust. The spice builds the right way, the pickles are on point, and the overall sandwich is the kind of thing that earns repeat visits. Ratings from the table ranged from a solid 8 to a 9 out of 10 depending on who you asked, which for a group of people who take chicken sandwiches seriously, is a strong showing.
The crispy blackened fish sandwich held its own too. Clean, well-seasoned, and a nice contrast to the heat of the chicken options. If you are going with a group, ordering one to split alongside the chicken is worth it.
The fries rounded everything out. Simple, well done, and exactly what you want alongside a sandwich this good.
